Lush Cosmetics Easter Treats without the Sweets

“Instead of giving family and friends over-packaged, calorific chocolate eggs this year, treat them to a tasty selection of LUSH’s new bath products especially for Easter. These little luxuries are much kinder to the waistline and the environment, as LUSH bath bombs, bubble bars and soaps are solid which means they are preservative and packaging free.  And to top it all off, LUSH don’t test on animals, preferring instead to dedicate products to bunnies as opposed to testing on them…”

It’s time to hop into spring with Lush Cosmetics that will leave your skin smooth, moisturized, and glowing while taking you back to your childhood memories from some of the candy inspired scents and Easter themed shapes. I checked in with the experts at Lush this month to see if they had anything exciting going on and that’s when I heard the news about limited edition products arriving along with a few returning items that were back by popular demand! The Easter treats included the Bunch of Carrots Re-usable Bubble Bars (which came back from last year), The Immaculate Eggception Bath BombCarrot Gift, and the Funny Bunny Knot Wrap Gift. I was even more delighted when Lush’s PR allowed me to pick and choose some goodies to try. This was exciting for me since I never tried any of the bath products for myself, but I have purchased them as gifts for other people and they love them! I’m not sure why it took me this long to try them but I decided to choose a mix of limited edition products and an ol’ time favorite.

Lush Bath 3 web

The Brightside Bubble Bar, $10.95, is back to join the all year round luxury bath bombs and melts. It has Sicilian mandarin, tangerine and bergamot oils with a squeeze of lemon. I cut the bubble bar into three chunks using a butter knife which wasn’t difficult like I thought it would be. I only used one of the three pieces, crumbled it up in my bath water, and watched it turn orange while the aromas dispersed. I also have been dealing with these random dry patches appearing on my back and chest (I’m waiting to see my dermatologist to sort out the real issue) and after using the Brightside the itchiness from my irritated skin calmed down. It’s invigorating but can work well for irritated skin due to the bergamot oil combination in the bubble bar.

Lush Bath 5 web

The new Golden Egg Bath Melt Bomb, $8.95, is an extraordinary Lush creation that combines a Bath Bomb and a Luxury Bath Melt together. The egg has a dusted golden exterior with coco butter and olive oil surrounding the fizzy Bath Bomb inside. I dropped the egg into the filled bath tub and it fizzed into a golden yellow color releasing a subtle honey- toffee aroma (The same aroma as the best-selling Honey I Washed The Kids soap!). After soaking my skin I had a golden glow, my skin was supple and moisturized to the MAX!

Lush Bath 2 web

The new Bunny Bubble Bar, $6.95, is inspired by Alice in Wonderland and is packed with shea butter. I sliced the bar in half so I could experience the Bubble Bunny Bar more than once and that’s when I discovered it had a violet interior. I crumbled one half of the bunny into my bath and it turned violet. The tiny pieces of flowers did catch me off guard at first but once I figured out what it was I didn’t panic. Half of the Bunny Bubble Bar didn’t create as much bubbles as the little piece of Brightside Bubble Bar. When using this I would use the entire bunny for the maximum results. I never soaked in flower petals before and that made me feel like I was at a spa but in my own home. The vanilla aroma was light, sweet, and left my skin nice and smooth.

Lush Bath 4 web

The new Carrot Soap (price no longer listed) has a pretty strong aroma but once it’s being used the scent is less over powering. The orange soap is made with carrot oil and has a shea butter center in the shape of a bunny hiding inside each slice. It also has fruity essential oils such as buchu, lemon and bergamot as well. The soap comes in a block form and instead of trying to suds up with the entire bar I sliced off a small piece. This makes it easy to use the soap for multiple purposes around the house. You can even take a slice of Carrot Soap on the go when you travel. While using the soap I could feel the velvety coating from the shea butter being rubbed into my skin. After using it my skin was a tad bit on the dry side so I followed up with a small amount of moisturizer. I do believe once I start to use the soap more often (and once my patches of dry irritated skin subside) I will see and feel the full effects of the Carrot Soap.

Lush Bath 1 web

The Fluffy Egg Bath Bomb, $5.95, is an Easter classic. It smells just like jelly beans and the candy-scented fizzer turns the bath water bright pink. A cool fact about this Bath Bomb is that it uses a vegetarian musk (a cruelty-free synthetic musk) to give the egg its scent. The aroma was not my favorite in comparison to the other bath treats but it did leave my skin smooth and lightly scented. This pink shaped egg is perfect for kids and would make the greatest bath time experience.

Currently a few of the items I reviewed are out of stock online but you can always check your nearest Lush Cosmetics store for more selections. My favorite bath treat would have to be the Brightside and the Golden Egg because they are full of my most loved ingredients like coco butter and bergamot oil. All of the products listed above are also vegan so they will make a great last minute gift for an environmentally conscious friend as well. Enjoy the holiday and let me know which Easter limited Edition products you’ve tried!

6 Natural Anti-Dandruff Remedies

The weather has been changing so drastically lately. Since it finally decided to feel like Spring, it’s time to ditch those heavy products that we all love during the winter and transition into lighter butters, oils, and moisturizing sprays. If your scalp over produces dead skin cells, which is the common cause for the scalp condition dandruff, here are a few natural remedies that will keep your scalp free of build up during the warm months and all year long. These healthy alternatives are brought to you by BlackGirlLongHair.com!

Apple Cider Vintner (ACV) Rinse

apple cider vinager

Mix 1 cup of apple cider vinegar with 2 cups of water into a spray bottle. Spray on your hair and scalp. Massage it into your scalp gently. Leave it in your hair for about 5-15mins then rinse. Moisturize as desired (preferably with something light like coconut or jojoba oil). Repeat this process once or twice a week depending on the severity of dandruff.

Lemon

lemon

The acidity of freshly squeezed lemon juice as with ACV helps break down fungus that is often the cause of dandruff outbreaks. Massage 2 tablespoons of lemon into your scalp. Leave it in your scalp for about 2 mins. I know this will sting. Then mix 1 teaspoon of lemon with 1 cup of water and rinse your hair with it. Repeat daily until no longer needed. You can also squeeze an entire lemon into a bowl and mix with 5-10 tablespoons of coconut oil. Massage the mixture into your scalp and leave it in for 20-30mins and rinse with a mild shampoo. Repeat this once or twice a week.

Tea Tree Oil

tea tree

Tea tree oil has been medically proven to be a natural antifungal and functions as a good disinfectant. You can mix 5-10 drops of tea tree oil in your shampoo and wash your hair as normal. However I find this method to be more effective; after shampooing your hair, mix 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil into 1 cup of warm water or Aloe Vera juice, spray into your scalp and let it sit for a few minutes. Pat the extra moisture out, but don’t wash it out.

Baking Soda

baking-soda-2

Baking soda kills fungus and gently exfoliates the scalp of excess dead skin. You will need 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 cup of water and a few drops of rosemary oil (Optional).  Mix 1 Table spoon of baking soda with 1 cup of warm water or 2 tablespoons with 2 cups of warm water and so on. Use an applicator bottle or clean empty shampoo bottle and apply the mix to your hair and scalp. Shake well before use. Use this in place of shampoo and rinse as normal. Use a light moisturizer like Jojoba oil afterwards. Repeat this once a week.

Salt

salt

Salt is a natural exfoliator, it gets rid of extra oils and dead skin flakes. Rubbing it on your scalp will also help soothe the itchy feeling. You need 3 Table Spoons of salt (Epsom Salt or Dead Sea salts are great if you have them, but regular salt is okay too).  Gently massage the 3 Table spoons of salt into your scalp while its dry or slightly damp for 2-3mins. Shampoo immediately afterwards. You can repeat this process once a week.

Eat Right

meal

You all knew this was coming! I cannot stress how eating properly affects all aspects of our wellness. Eating well helps hair and nail growth as well as improvement of overall skin condition. Eat green leafy vegetables (raw in salad form or blended in juice form), this encourages healthy skin, hair and nail growth. Fish oils are also essential for beautiful hair and skin, taking Omega 3,6 and 9 supplements will not cure dandruff but will reduce the severity. Also, consider adding lean proteins like fish, eggs, nuts and beans to your diet. –BlackGirlLongHair.com

I don’t have many issues with dandruff but its a common scalp condition and I know this information will be helpful to a lot of people. If you use other remedies that are not listed above let me know in the comments.

The Art of Perfumery: LURK Natural Fragrances

There is nothing better than the fresh and lingering scent of your favorite perfume. Whether you spray it , roll it, or dap it on to your clothing and skin the aroma can send you into a new state of mind by picking up your mood in an instant. I love to smell good, don’t get me wrong, but I never was able to get into perfumed scents like my mother or sister (who spray their perfume every time they get the chance!). I found myself wearing my perfume only for a special occasion because I never did quite find the right scent for my senses. Yes the packaging looks nice and seductive but to me it just smells like a muster of artificial sweetness so that didn’t click well with my overall natural essence. Then I was introduced to the natural fragrance brand, Lurk, by Kate at Pistol PR and I knew this was the solution to my perfume struggle.

Lurk creates small batch artisanal fragrances, hand blended and poured in NY. Using pure essential oils in a USDA certified organic jojoba base, Lurk is a great natural alternative (I can’t forget to mention jojoba oil is my favorite go-to product I like to use on my skin and hair because it mimics the natural sebum (oil) our skin produces).

Lurk owner

“Iʼm driven to try and bridge the gap between the green beauty scene and the more mainstream glossy marketplace. I want to create products that transcend the traditional concept of green fragrance and beauty.” – Anne Sanford (Pictured above)

Lurk1

The founder of Lurk, Anne Sanford, has an extensive background in beauty marketing, creative direction, branding and brand development with sales director positions at Bare Escentuals and Red Flower to name a few. On top of being a self taught perfumer, the development of Lurk was inevitable in 2008 and she began mixing fragrances soon after in 2009. The brand has collaborated with Anthropologie on a range of body care products, and also released a limited edition antioxidant and luminosity treatment. When asking about how Sanford came up with the intriguing names for each of the Lurk Fragrances she explains howThe fragrance names are very deliberate. I chose to use formula names from my composition book and lab/studio notes. I did this because I didnʼt want to “name” the scents. Scent names immediately give the user an idea in their mind about what the scent smells like. Thus, an opinion is formed and a direction is taken before the scent has been experienced. Names also can give a user an expectation as well. By removing this element of the experience the user remains curious and questioning right up until the very moment the aroma is inhaled. This way we don’t direct or manipulate the experience and we don’t influence the outcome or the opinion. We allow people to just take in the product and experience it in a completely intimate way that is uniquely their own.”

lurk2

These small bottles of fragrances may not look powerful but its concentrated aroma can last from 2 to 6 hours on the body depending on the pH of your skin once applied. I was even more curious as to why Lurk uses jojoba oil as the product’s base but since jojoba is a natural preservative it makes complete sense because it eliminates the need for any chemical additives. I will be back with a more detailed review after sampling some Lurk fragrances really soon…so until next time!

Behind The Scene Consultation at Siaani Salon

It’s about that time of year, well I’m actually long over due, when I go to the hair salon for a trim. In the past I went to the nearest Dominican salon for my shampoo, blow dry and trim. Although I didn’t go often (maybe twice a year) I could tell my hair felt the after shock of their services. I’ve had my scalp scorched by the flaming hot dryers and my type 4 kinky curls racked and pulled through a tiny round brush (or what they considered detangling) was becoming enough. Now that I care for my hair differently, I want to go to a salon where my curls are welcomed for being in their natural springy state, or a place that gives me the option of cutting my hair either dry or wet (which is not seen as a common method for my hair type and it is possible). This year it has been my mission to search for hair salons in Philly who can cater to natural hair like mine and yours.

3

The first step in doing so is by setting up a consultation with a stylist after researching the salon. This may seem like common sense but in this day and age some stylist can create a great looking hair style but lack skills in the hair care/health department. And with that being I said I compiled a list of hair salons and went through a few Yelp reviews when I came across Stephanie Fiorilli at Siaani Salon to kick start my first salon consultations. She was even kind enough to let my boyfriend, of AJsculture.com, capture the moment with his camera.

I was already familiar with the salon since I came here for an extension installation a year ago by another stylist. The deciding factor for my consultation with Stephanie was her training with curl experts Oiudad and Devachan. The two brands specialize in providing products for textured hair and cutting courses where stylist receive their training in New York. We chatted about Stephanie’s 19 years of experience in the hair care industry and learned that her specialties are cutting, curls, and up-dos but she does just about everything! She took the time to explain to me how cutting my hair texture while wet would work.

2

6

She picked up strands of my curly hair and demonstrated how much would likely be removed when trimmed. With curly hair trimming it can be trickier because the stylist has to feel the damaged ends of the hair while wet in order to remove it. Stephanie would first trim the hair while dry then shampoo and condition the hair using Curlisto products. With a leave-in conditioner she would clean up any sections she missed with the shears again for a final shape. She also believes that over touching curling hair during the cutting process, not accounting for how much the hair will shrink, and not properly conditioning the hair are common mistakes made when dealing with curly hair.

5

4

Look at my curly fro wild and free! A great trim will give my hair more shape and I can have my heat damaged ends in the crown area removed

Stephanie and I were chatting away talking about hair and I enjoyed my educational consultation with her. Both of us believe it is important to have a consultation with a stylist prior to the actual appointment because it allows both parties to get to know each other and address questions or concerns before making any changes to your appearance. The best thing about a consultation is that it’s free! You can check out Stephanie and her work at 2032 Chestnut Street, Phila, PA 19103. Her base rate for a trim is $100 and the price fluctuates depending on the cut desired.

Do you normally schedule a hair consultation before going to a new stylist? Was the consultation beneficial in any way and do you think hair consultations are important? Drop a comment or two below!

The Secret Powers of Cinnamon

Many people may undermine the health and beauty benefits of using the spice cinnamon because we commonly associate it with baking or tea brewing. Beautylish.com has four ways on how to use the spice that could open you eyes to variety of purposes. Instead of using cinnamon only during the cold and winter seasons, like the most of us, you’ll have a different outlook on this simple yet potent ingredient.

Plump your lips

Believe it or not, cinnamon is a vital ingredient in many popular lip plumpers on the market. To plump on the fly, mix a pinch of cinnamon into your favorite gloss, balm, or a dollop of petroleum jelly. Smooth onto lips and let set for five minutes, and rinse off before applying color.

Clear your skin

Acne-prone skin has a lot to gain from the anti-inflammatory effects of cinnamon—it helps reduce redness and relax overstressed pores. In a bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of raw honey with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Apply to the face, leave on for ten minutes, then rinse.

Cut your cramps

During your period, or any time your stomach is in knots, ingesting cinnamon will relax tight muscles and increase circulation in the abdomen, relieving both cramps and regular indigestion-related aches. An easy way to take it? Steep black or caffeine-free rooibus tea with a cinnamon stick. Bonus: Cinnamon tea can also help lower cholesterol.

Lift your spirits

The earthy scent of cinnamon leaf oil is a potent mood enhancer. But you want to avoid applying it directly on the skin—so diffuse it instead. Try diluting ten drops cinnamon leaf oil in 1 ounce (or 6 tablespoons) of distilled water. Funnel the mixture into a pocket-size spray bottle and spritz into the air for a much-needed energy boost any time, anywhere! –Beautylish.com

Photo: __Martine Roch

Although I’m not into lip plumpers (my lips are naturally full enough!) but I will have to try the other methods. I’ve tried honey on my skin before but will have to incorporate the teaspoon of cinnamon. This is the perfect combination for me since I have acne prone skin and experience a lot of redness with my breakouts. On the other hand I tend to drink a lot of tea because me and my boyfriend hang out at coffee houses each week and I opt for the non-coffee options. If adding a dash of cinnamon can alleviate aches and calm the stomach then this remedy will become my go to during that time of the month when I’m the most groggiest and moody.

Have you ever used cinnamon in something other than your tea? If so what do you like to use it for and how does it make you feel after using the spice? Share with us!

Carol’s Daughter Now at Target

If you haven’t heard the exciting news then you can heard it from Lisa Price, the founder of Carol’s Daughter, herself! The brand has partnered with Target to bring you the same quality products but with consumer convenience in mind at an affordable price point. I’m so glad to see what was once known as the “Ethnic Hair Care” isle in many super markets and stores to expand to something much greater by identifying the need for products that cater to a variety of women and their hair textures! As Price explains it in an interview with Essence Magazine in this month’s issue:

“I felt like there was room to expand and to have my products seen in a more universal way. I love how Target has taken on the ethnic  aisle and recoined it ‘multicultural,’ making it a pleasant place to shop and not one where you feel embarrassed or have to go and dust things off before purchasing them.

The Price describes this reunion as #PerfectPerfected with the same formula and natural ingredients, new packaging, in a new location (Target), everything about this moment is just right. I always did like Target’s hair care selection better than any other super market and now there are even more reasons for me to sneak off to the store for a shopping spree. Carol’s Daughter also added an exclusive Sacred Tiare line, which includes Sulfate-Free Shampoo $12, Fortifying Conditioner $14, Restorative Hair Mask $15, Leave-In Conditioner $12, Smoothing Serum $15, and Styling Cream $12, only sold at Target.

Scared Tiare

“Sacred Tiare is a formula that addresses the strength of the hair. Some key ingredients are moringa seed oil, which protects the hair from the sun’s drying, damaging and color-depleting rays; babassu oil, which keeps hair sleek and strong; and calendula, vitamin D5, and coconut oil–all of which help to nourish the hair, keeping it healthy while reducing frizz.” -Lisa Price

Now we all can go out to Target to purchase our go-to essentials or a one of a kind product the next time we make a grocery store run. I believe this partnership will open up even more opportunities for many of the women entrepreneurs who are in the hair care production niche. As Target continues to look for innovative products to grow their multicultural hair care selection and stay proactive with the feedback from female consumers, then they have a great thing happening for them. I already see this chain reaction taking effect as I found out yesterday via Instagram that Alikay Naturals, founded by Rochelle in 2009, was found on the shelves at the DC Target and Target.com. How amazing is that! In the mean time, check your local Target to make sure they carry Carol’s Daughter, but if you prefer to shop online you have that option as well and tell me what you think about the products below.

What’s Your Hair Texture: Determining Your Curl Pattern

In Featured Image: Myself and a 3-4 day old twist out on my hair

When describing curly locs or uniquely twisted coils there are plenty of ways to describe naturally textured hair. When describing one’s hair, you may hear naturals use a series of letters ranging from a-c and numbers from 2-4. I’m not TOO familiar with this hair typing system and thought it would be helpful to educate myself and breakdown the subject so that it may become a bit more understandable to others who may have been somewhat confused like me (I don’t have the answers to everything but we all can easily become more knowledgeable with some internet probing)! Black Girl with Long Hair had some detailed information about the hair typing guide and like myself, they also thought NaturallyCurly.com’s guide was useful. With both of the resources combined determining your naturally curly texture won’t be as intimidating as you thought it would be. The insert below will break down the hair types first, ranging from 4-2, and then the subtypes: a-c. Take a deep breathe and enjoy the lesson:

Type 4 – Kinky Hair

• Type 4 is kinky, or very tightly curled, with a clearly visible curl pattern
• Circumference: Crochet needle or even smaller
• The hair is very wiry, very tightly coiled and very, very fragile
• Type 4 hair can range from fine/thin to wiry/coarse with lots and lots of strands densely packed together
• Type 4 hair has fewer cuticle layers than any other hair type, which means that it has less natural protection from the damage you inflict by combing, brushing, curling, blow-drying and straightening it
• Type 4 hair is known to shrink up to 75% of the actual hair length

There are two Type 4 subtypes:
•4b: Has a “Z” pattern, less of a defined curl pattern. Instead of curling or coiling, the hair bends in sharp angles like the letter “Z”; has a cotton-like feel

•4a: Tightly coiled hair that, when stretched, has an “S” pattern, much like curly hair. It tends to have more moisture than 4b; has a definite curl pattern

Type 3c – Curly Kinky Hair

Subtype 3c is really more than a subtype. It’s a type NaturallyCurly members developed because the original system left out this hair type, which falls between 3b and 4a, having its own special characteristics.

• Type 3c hair has tight curls in corkscrews
• Circumference: Pencil or straw
• The curls can be either kinky, or very tightly curled, with lots and lots of strands densely packed together
• Getting this type of hair to blow dry straight is more challenging than for 3a or 3b, but it usually can be done
• The very tight curls are usually fine in texture

Type 3 – Curly Hair

• There is a definite loopy “S” pattern
• Curls are well-defined and springy
• Type 3 hair has a lot of body; it is easily styled in its natural state or straightened with a blow-dryer
• It isn’t coarse, like many believe, but soft and very fine—there’s just a lot of it
• Combinations of Type 3a and 3b curls are common

There are two Type 3 subtypes:
•3b: Medium amount of curl, from bouncy ringlets to tight corkscrews.
Circumference: Sharpie size

•3a: Curls are naturally big, loose and usually very shiny.
Circumference: sidewalk-chalk size

Type 2 – Wavy Hair

• The wave or curl forms throughout the hair in the shape of the letter “S”
• Type 2 hair sticks close to the head; it won’t bounce up, even when layered

There are three Type 2 subtypes:
•2c: Thick and coarse and more resistant to styling and will frizz easily
•2c celebrities: Jennifer Nettles, Daisy Fuentes, Brittany Snow
•2b: Medium-textured and a little resistant to styling; has a tendency to frizz
•2b celebrities: Joss Stone, Nelly Furtado, Carrie Underwood
•2a: Fine, thin and very easy to handle; easily straightened or curled

Black Girl with long Hair provided great information about how to figure out your texture type. They even included styling tips and referenced celebrities who fell within those categories which is why you can see their names listed within each hair type section. You can click here for the full article. If you happen to be more of a visual person like myself, NaturallyCurly.com has a virtual hair texture quiz you can take to make this process fun, quick and easy with images of real everyday woman to help paint a realistic view of the hair types.

The hair type quiz is easily found by clicking on the “Explore” or “Tool” section on the website

These images of the different hair types makes determining your hair texture really simple!

photo(11)

Using this evaluation can be useful when looking for styling techniques or products more suitable for your hair. Sometimes people may find that they don’t fall into an identified category because of how broad the system is and can easily lead one to frustration over something that holds no real significance. The NaturallyCurly.com community moved around this issue by creating a subtype to compensate for this lacking system and for those who fell in between a sub set (the explanation can be found above under the 3c hair type section). What I don’t like about this typing system is how it gives women and natural hair transitioners another reason to differentiate their hair from the next person. Or it could continue to solidify how one texture is better than another. Like many systems that are created (government, education, social justice), there are many drawbacks that can allow a group/category seem “elite” or better than those who don’t fall into that group. Truthfully, all curls should be treated equally: with lots of  moisture and tender loving care.

IMG_20131223_152742

A few days after a stretched style, like two strand twists, is when my hair has the most volume

With my hair and tight curls, I am considered a type 4 because my curls have no real definition and appear very zig zag. I do expericene 75% shrinkage each time I shampoo my hair so stretching my hair is a must! I have a slightly looser curl pattern in the top crown of my head that are a 4a. I also currently have some heat damage in this section and the ends of my hair are extremely straight which is why I have been gradually removing the damage. Most importantly, I know my hair is dense, is comparable to the feeling of cotton, but my strands are fine and fragile as well. My hair is porous which is why it can absorb a large amount of water and I find myself combating shrinkage on a daily bases (one day it looks like I cut my hair and other days it can look like it grew 4inches!). Taking care of your natural hair and maintaining its health should be your main focus because all hair is good hair, but healthy hair is the best hair!

Can A Beauty Ad Do This?

I don’t come across to many unique ads that are beauty related which is why this one was worth the exposure. I graduated with a B.A. in Advertising from Penn State and although I don’t work in the ad industry I always find myself cross examining commercials to uncover the “big idea”  behind it all. While watching the new season of Scandal I scrolled through my Twitter feed and clicked on a link from AdAge about a haircare poster reacting to the movement of the subway train. Like a nerd I went to watch the video in awe and had the nerve to forward the link to two other people.

In Stockholm, Sweden an advertising agency used ultra sonic sensors to make a digital poster come to life for the hair care brand Apotek Hjartat. Each time a train passed the poster in the subway the model’s hair would fly around as if it was in the wind. You can see the people and their reactions in the video and believe me I would have been just as surprised too! I never seen anything like this representing a hair care product and it’s actually a really great way to showcase a product giving your hair LIFE. I would have to say its genius indeed and I want to give a thumbs up to the agency who brought this idea to life. Don’t forget to watch the video above, share it, or post a comment about it to let me know how you feel.

Have you ever seen a digital poster for a hair care product like this? What would be your reaction if you were to see this poster? Do you think you would be able to find a beauty ad like that in the U.S.?

B.A.N.T.U Presents: “Quest to Go Natural Scavenger Hunt”

Yesterday I got a text from a friend about a natural hair scavenger hunt on Temple University’s campus and since I didn’t have anything planned that night I grabbed the boyfriend to go see what it was all about. The “Quest to Go Natural Scavenger Hunt” was presented by Temple’s first natural hair and beauty organization B.A.N.T.U., which stands for Beautifully and Naturally Tangled Up. The organization was founded in November of 2011 and has been empowering and educating others to love and maintain their natural hair.

I met the natural beauties of B.A.N.T.U and other amazing students who joined in on the scavenger hunt. I was already in a competitive mode after watching the latest episode of Amazing Race earlier that day. After teaming up into pairs The entire group migrated to three locations (Fresh Grocer, Rite Aide, and a beauty supply store) with a list of riddles to solve while looking for items that coincided with things used during the natural hair journey. It was quite the challenge but fun at the same time. I learned some hair care facts and each participant went home with a prize for their curly manes. You can learn more about B.A.N.T.U by going to their Facebook like page for information about meet ups, discussions, and activities on empowering others to embrace their natural beauty. Follow the organization on Twitter and Instagram as well @BANTU_TU
