Your senses are an essential part of you. They provide your brain with all of the information that you need from the world around you. They help you to make sense of your environment and keep you from danger.

Every day your eyes, ears, taste buds, nose, and skin will take in tens of thousands of pieces of information and send countless signals to your brain. You won’t even notice them doing this much of the time, they do it so seamlessly well. Together your five senses work together to help you appreciate and identify people, places, food, weather, and so much more. Through your eyesight, you can enjoy looking at artwork or watching movies. With society relying heavily on technology for everyday use and convenience, the eyes can take a harsh beating when staring at bright screens about 80 percent of the time.

Let’s talk about how you can look after, and be more mindful of keeping your eye health.

What are some issues that can Affect Your Eyesight?

There are a number of problems that may affect your eyesight, and conditions such as short-sightedness and long-sightedness are common in people of all ages. For many people, they are conditions that develop at a young age, while for others, they can come on at any point during adulthood.

If what you can see gets blurry the further away you are from it, then you are short-sighted. However, if things that are closer to you are blurry, then you may well be long-sighted. In both of these cases, a full eye exam would be good to find out whether you need glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision.

If you’re experiencing trouble with your vision while your driving, like not being able to read the number plate of a car in front of you, then you should get your eyes checked.

If you find that you are getting headaches from looking at books and screens often, or from focusing on a specific task for a long period of time, you should go for an eye test.

You should pay a visit to your optometrist at least once every two years, regardless of whether or not you are experiencing any of the signs that you might have issues with your eyesight. Often, changes in your eyesight are very subtle and you may not notice them yourself. It will take an eye test to find out whether you need glasses or a change in your current lens prescription. The earlier you can spot these changes in your eyesight, the better.

What should you Expect from an eye exam?

During your visit to the optometrist, you will undergo a few short tests. The most common test will involve reading letters from a light board. You’ll wear different lenses which will let the optician know if you need to wear glasses and what strength they need to be.

In addition to tests for short and long-sightedness, your optician may also look for glaucoma and other conditions that will affect your eyesight. Other tests may involve a light being shone into your eyes or a small puff of air being blown at your eyes.

Following your eye test, your optician may advise getting prescription glasses or contact lenses, you can then buy your glasses online form somewhere like Eyeglasses.com. My last pair is from ZenniOptical.com but you can’t go wrong with either of these cool sites and the design options available!

Taking Care of Your Eyesight

In addition to going for regular eye checkups, there are plenty of other ways that you can protect your eyesight.

If you spend a lot of your time looking at screens either for work or for pleasure, make sure and give yourself a break from time-to-time. Staring at screens can cause you to strain your eyes and is likely to start to cause you headaches after a while. By scheduling short breaks away from the screen, you will be able to let your eyes rest for a while.

Eating a balanced diet will help you to look after your eyes. To keep your eyes sharp you make sure you have plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables each and every day. Look out for foods that are high in vitamin A and beta carotene. Vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and squashes will all help.

Protecting your eyesight in the sun is essential. The sun can do serious damage to your eyes so it is always important to make sure that you wear sunglasses on any bright sunny days. Even if there is some cloud cover, you should still make sure that you wear sunglasses as it can still affect you.

Make sure that your sunglasses have a high UV rating of at least 400. Without this protection, your sunglasses are going to be useless against the sun’s rays. And, even with sunglasses on, you should never stare at the sun.
