How To Amp Up Your Deep Conditioner

It was wash day for my kinky curls recently and since I’ve been wearing my natural hair braided and cornrowed underneath my customized hair wig, a deep conditioning treatment was a no brainier to restore my hair’s moisture level after wearing this protective style. I normally do a mix of either mayonnaise, honey, avocados, or olive oil as a deep treatment. But once I read about this simple conditioning recipe on NaturallyCurlly.com, which only required adding a few ingredients to my current conditioner, there was nothing stopping me from giving it a try. Besides, I had all of the things I needed sitting in the house so I didn’t need to spend extra money!

What You’ll Need:

  • 4 parts conditioner
  • 1 part honey
  • 1 part clear aloe vera gel (such as Fruit of the Earth)
  • optional oil (such as coconut)

Directions:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients
  2. Heat in microwave for 10-15 seconds (just to warm)
  3. Mix the ingredients again
  4. Apply to clean, wet hair in sections
  5. Leave on for 60 minutes with a shower cap on

For the conditioner I mixed 2 parts of the TRESemmé Flawless Curls conditioner and 2 parts of the Biolage Hydrathérapie conditioner (I had a sample packet of the Biolage so I threw it in the mix). For the optional oil I used jojoba oil. It’s the very first natural oil I began using once I went natural. Plus it’s similar to the oil our skin produces. I didn’t bother to heat up the mixture because once I let it sit out it was at room temperature. With all the ingredients combined the conditioner smelled sweet and delicious enough to eat! The conditioner had a great slip to it which made finger detangling my tight curls that much easier and the added oil left my hair with a nice protective barrier. Have you ever tried this deep conditioning combination? If so share your thoughts and if you haven’t would you try it?

Nail Care

Experience The Lacquer Lounge Nail Bar & Beautique

I’ve been on the look out for a new nail salon that offers quality services, specifically gel manicures. I searched the web for nail salons in the city when I came across the Lacquer Lounge website. Right away the name intrigued me, along with the bright pink website, and it was enough to make me head down to South Philly’s Queen Village area and give it a try as a birthday gift to myself. The nail salon offers luxury services and focuses on sanitation practices which is hard to come by these days. I invited my cousin to join me for a Lacquer Signature Manicure and Pedicure. She couldn’t resist after checking out the website as well so we both waited anxiously for our appointment day to come.

Once we arrived at the Lacquer Lounge for our appointments we were greeted at the door and checked in with someone at the front desk. I took this moment to take in the atmosphere and the stunning decor. The pink walls with the scroll -like designs stood out against the white manicure and pedicure stations. I even looked over at the nail drying stations to see the chairs draped with luxe fur; this gave the perfect touch of elegance. After scanning the facility, I went ahead and picked out my gel nail polish from a wide variety of colors. Instead of viewing the polish from the bottles, I could see the true color of each polish from the painted nail swatches displayed in a neatly framed case. This makes choosing a gel color more convenient because you can actually see the color without having to try it on your nails first, but since there were so many color hues to choose from, it took me longer than expected to make a solid decision. What can I say, a girl likes to have options!

Next, I met my nail technician, Mary, who prepped me for the signature pedicure. The first thing I noticed is how the Lacquer Lounge does not use the pedicure foot beds that many of the other salons have. I am sure you’ve heard of  horrible stories of women contracting bacterial infections after having their pedicure. Well you don’t have to worry about that happening here! The mobile foot beds have disposable liners that are inserted before each use. Every client is guaranteed a sanitary environment for their feet which minimizes the spread of bacteria. The pedicure tools are also sterilized and packaged so each nail technician opens a new set of tools for every service. My signature pedicure began with a conditioning oil soak, then came the exfoliation with the sugar souffle followed by the hot towel treatment. The body butter massaged into my skin restored moisture back into my tiresome feet. After Mary applied the nail polish, it felt like I had a brand new set of feet. My final service was the gel manicure and I had a particular design in mind that I wanted to try. I showed Mary an image of nails with the glitter ombre I had took a screen shot of and she gave me exactly what I wanted. My hands were also pampered with the hot towel and massaged with the body butter. I was more than pleased with my experience and my cousin that tagged along with me has been raving about the Lacquer Lounge since.

There aren’t to many places where you can purchase body care products, jewelry, and receive waxing, tanning, and nail services all at once. The nail bar is like no other because it’s a destination place for all your beauty needs. If your thinking about visiting the lounge make sure you say hi to the owner Lisa and let her know that I sent you. Your going to enjoy your experience, trust me!

Miles Table Sausage and Egg Brioche

This morning the Fashionable Joe and I had a taste for breakfast and headed to one of our favorite and most frequented spots: Miles Table. Located in South Philly’s Graduate Hospital neighborhood, the restaurant’s space is filled with white table tops and chairs with black and white family photos as wall decor. The cozy environment is great for meetings, quick family lunches, as well as dinners with a byob option. Using fresh local farm ingredients, Miles Table has a variety of menu entrees including all day breakfast, flavorful lunch specials, 1/2 off burger Wednesdays and make your own pasta bowl Fridays.

This time I around I tried the sriracha sausage and egg brioche for my late breakfast fix. The sriracha turkey sausage, fried eggs, arugula and blue cheese on a brioche bread were new flavors to me that I greatly enjoyed. The egg’s yolk gently burst as I cut my hefty sandwich in half which was a clear indicator of it being cooked to sunny side perfection. The bitter green arugula sprouts balanced out with the blue cheese crumbs and the house made maple sriarcha was filled with spicy flavors with a kick. There was a bit to much blue cheese on the brioche for my liking so I would request a light layer of it when ordering it next time. With the fresh food, quick preparation time, and inexpensive prices, there’s no wonder why it’s where the neighborhood eats!

The Woman Behind the Original Moxie

Over the past few days I have come across loads of natural products for curly, coiled, and kinky hair types when I discovered the Original Moxie. During the same time I spotted the brand’s creator, Rachel Blistein, featured on TinShingle’s #SmallBizSpotlight for an interview. The Landscape Architect turned hair care product mixologist started her brand after having a hard time finding products for her mane full of curls.

Original Moxie uses amazing natural ingredients, essential oil fragrances, practices sustainability, and is a cruelty free product. It was great to learn about nutrient packed ingredients that were unfamiliar to me, like Cupuaçu Butter (derived from a tree found in Brazil) and Squalane (derived from olives); I was glad to find everything all in one convenient place! Blistein also created a 3-D Diagnostic System to help customers identify their hair’s density, dryness, and degree of curl so there is less confusion on which products work best for your hair care needs.

I absolutely love Rachel’s Hair Story which included a picture timeline of her many hair phases found under the Our Story section on the website. As a woman with textured hair who had once turned to chemical relaxers to straighten my curls, I can totally relate to her journey and I want to continue sharing my experiences with others.

Mushmina’s Through the Lens in Morocco Photo Series

I first caught wind of this amazing cultural clothing boutique when I started working on South Street and found myself at their one year anniversary celebration earlier this year. Each time I go inside Mushmina I’m taken back down memory lane when I was a study abroad student in India for the first time. Although the Southeast Asian and African cultures differ, there are many similarities in their textile techniques, hand crafted accessories, and distinguished patterns.

1451444_231819700319588_190566577_n

Mushmina was founded in 2009 by sisters, Heather and Katie O’Neill, who spent their time traveling and living in Morocco and Mali. After discovering the lack of employment opportunities for artisans to generate income using their craft, Mushmina was born “to create beautiful inspired products that have cultural integrity and soul.” -Mushmina

Along with Mushmina’s line of fair-trade products, the boutique also carries sustainable and eco-friendly brands such as MADE-BYOdd Molly, and Prairie Underground just to name a few.

1450796_231820710319487_1863532914_n

The Through the Lens in Morocco photo series was an intimate showcase of Heidi Roland Photography’s work. The pieces placed strategically throughout the boutique captured Mushmina’s process of art making and the country’s beauty for everyone to experience. The viewers marveled over matted frames displaying colorful fabrics being intertwined with the Moroccan women and their lifestyle while listening to local artist Hector Williams play music on his handmade instrument made from recycled cigar boxes and hair pins. After talking to Heidi about her collection, she pointed out two photos she coined her favorite named “Zohra” and “Halima.” Being in Morocco during Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, Heidi also experienced the breaking of the fast which is symbolized through her photograph.

This was also the perfect time to ask how the name for the boutique, “Mushmina,” came about. And to my surprise, “Mushmina” happens to be a made up word Heather, co-founder and production manager, used as a word of endearment to call her sister Katie, co-founder and creative director, when they were younger. Now that’s a cool fact to remember!

Throughout the day the crowd continued to sip wine and ate refreshments while checking out the photo series and latest fashion. Henna artist, Alima Umm Lam’yaa, was also there creating hand art for those who wanted to take home a piece of Morocco with them. It’s always a cultural experience and a breath of fresh air when visiting Mushmina and I appreciate every moment.

Staying on Trend With ellelauri

In Featured Picture, from left to right: The Marie Dress, the Antoinette Dress, and the Hattie Skirt with a Knit sweater

Last week I was taking a walk through the Liberty Place shopping center when I came across this chic contemporary clothing boutique named ellelauri. I walked in to take a peak and was very pleased with what I saw and knew I would have to come back. During my second visit, Bridget, one of the women who works in the boutique, was able to show me some of their new pieces for the fall which incorporated black (a color you can never go wrong with) while elegantly taking it to the next level.

The floor mannequins were styled by mixing the dark hue with different textured fabrics or accessories. They displayed the Marie Dress, the Antoinette Dress, and the Hattie Skirt paired with a chunky knit sweater. The Antoinette Dress is Bridget’s favorite piece. She likes the flattering effects of the lace details along the arms and mentioned how easy it is to pair the dress with leggings for another look.

After having my chic fashion recap,  I was given a gift bag full of goodies: an ellelauri t-shirt, a 10% voucher, and a pair of silver stud prism earrings. I’m excited to come back for the boutique’s launch event in a few weeks and to purchase the Gia Blouse in navy with the leather collar I’ve been eyeing. Check back soon for more details!
