Retaining Your Hair’s Length: Tip #3 No Hair Picking!

Leave the picking to the birds instead of your hair. It’s best to let your hair just be some times without  pulling and probing at it. I have to admit I’m a victim of this pesky hair crime and I even noticed how it stomped my hair growth after picking at the naps in my nape (the very back) of my hair all the time! If you subconsciously find your fingers fiddling and twirling with your curly mane, try to keep it at a minimum and slowly, but surely, you will foster those good hair habits!

The “Own Your Bed Head” Project by Casper Sleep

I wonder how your hair looked this morning… Seriously! When you woke up, were you dealing with out-of-control frizz, an untamable tress-mess, or mangled tangles? If these sound familiar, then you’re exactly the person I want to talk to! – CasperSleep.com

If you didn’t know, Casper is a new sleep mattress start up that launched this spring and they’re in the process of wrapping up the “Own Your Bed Head” project. Casper asked participants to submit and share their tips on how one avoids bed head or embraces it. As a natural hair blogger, I believe night time maintenance plays a vital role when caring for curly or heavily textured hair because it’s more prone to breakage from daily manipulation and from lacking the ability to retain its moisture. Having a nightly hair care routine makes styling your hair less time consuming in the morning and it protects your hair from dryness, which in return fosters healthier hair growth. I simply own my bed head by combating it with these steps below:

Retaining Your Hair’s Length: Tip #2 Trimming Hair

Depending on how your hair grows some people can go longer without regularly trimming their hair, however, it is still necessary. When you think about it the ends of your hair have been exposed to harsh elements the longest (like the weather, sun, coloring, and heat styling) and can become damaged. Over time the new growth will move away from the roots and grow out and away from the scalp. This hair being grown out eventually becomes the ends of your hair and trimming it when needed also leaves the hair in a healthier state. If you ever heard of a hair stylist talking about how ‘split ends travel’ then you heard right! Once a split appears in the hair shaft it can only travel one way, that is upwards, and towards the roots which is the last thing you want to happen. The only way to remove a split end is to chop it off and to be honest it’s not as bad as most of us make it out to be. I love it when I get my hair trimmed because my hair is nice and flowy, when I wear it straight, and makes detangling my hair when curly a breeze. Don’t fear cutting shears at the hair salon but embrace the journey to healthier hair!

Retaining Your Hair’s Length: Tip #1 Low Manipulation

There are a few things people ask about when it comes to natural hair and retaining its length. Over the next few days here are some helpful reminders on how you can stay on track to growing a healthy mane. Implementing these changes may not happen immediately but these tips could help you over time to get through hair obstacles by recognizing mistakes and how to correct them by instilling better habits. It’s always a work in progress when it comes to our hair 🙂

This comes down to a variety of things such as heat styling, combing, or even detangling your hair. Curly hair and kinks can be a bit on the fragile side and therefore the less you manipulate it the better. When blow drying or combing the hair be sure to start at the ends of hair working up to the roots. Protective styling such as braids, flat twists, bun styles or installing extensions allows hair to have a break from the daily wear and tear of styling or heat application.

Trip to Boston: Travel Essentials Part #2

In Featured Image: I’m rocking my new Indique Virgin Hair Extensions, Bounce Coil Curl and Organic Curl, creation in Boston and it’s very low maintenance.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Boston and it is a very beautiful city. There was a bit of rain, some sunshine, and fun times like team building activities with my co workers and dining on the Spirit of Boston. Although I was only her for a short amount of time,  I absolutely would come back to the ivy looking city and would have to bring AJ with me. Now I have to fill you in on the travel essentials I took with me.

Trip to Boston: Travel Essentials Part #1

Hey All! This week, Sunday July 27th, I’m traveling to Boston for work! Each year my employer, Indique Virgin Indian Hair Extensions, has an annual day where all the staff across the country meet up in a city to get to know one another and review our goals as a company This year we’ll be in Boston, Massachusetts, where our headquarters is located, and I had to prepare my travel kit essentials to sustain my hair and skin over the next few days. With me I have:

  • Coconut Good soap
  • Loreal Advance Suncare Silky Sheer Lotion SPF 30
  • Sebamed Liquid Face & Body Wash (the light green liquid in the travel bottle)
  • Durros & Langel Sandalwood & Lavander toner (in the dermalogica spray bottle. Yes I like to reuse bottles!)
  • Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion
  • Frutique Beauty By Nature Apple Night Restore Creme
  • Neutrogena Make up remover wipes
  • Shea Moisture Lavender & Wild Orchid Body Butter

Some of these products I’m using for the first time so once I come back I will give a recap on how I like them.

[PRODUCT REVIEW] Mizani True Texture Curl Recharge Moisturizing Refresher

I wanted to give this new product review format a try; tell me what you think and if you like this or the past versions better 😉

What it is: Mizani True Texture Curl Recharge Moisturizing Refresher.

How it looks: Mizani’s True Texture collection offer products for wavy to tightly coiled hair textures. The Curl Recharge Moisturizing Refresher is one of the 5 products made to moisturize and smooth the hair cuticle for frizz-free curl definition.

How it feels:The spray is light, refreshing, and  has a silky smooth texture and a satin finish.

What’s special about it? This spray is on of the True Texture collection’s newest edition. The creme-gel product, which I could hardly even tell, can revive flattened day old curls and gives hair a natural boost of volume. The formula has Jojoba Oil, Apricot Oil, Vitamin E and ceramides .

Tips to Know: You can use the Curl Recharge Moisturizing Refresher on the hair while wet or dry. To minimize shrinkage on my hair when styled in stretched twist-outs, I like to hold the spray a few inches away from my hair and then blot the product in with my hands (moisture = shrinkage for me!). I also thought it would have been a good idea to use this as a detangler, in conjunction with some conditioner, before shampooing my hair but that didn’t work out to well..lol! I’m thinking it had something to do with the ceramides because I could feel the build up creating a layer on top of my hair, but hey it didn’t hurt to give it a try!

Price: $14.

Where to buy: Available at Ulta, and Sally Beauty.

Is It Ok To Use Dry Shampoo on Natural Hair?

Due to the make up and properties of naturally curly hair there are many steps taken to keep it moisturized, supple, and free of dryness because in the long run it can lead to fragile and damaged hair. I was browsing through YouTube and stumped across Vlogger Jessica Pettaway’s video about what a wash day is like for her 4c hair. Since my hair is also in that same category, I watched to see if I could pick up a new technique, or two, to help speed up my long hair cleansing  process. And that’s when I heard Jesscia mention how she includes a dry shampoo into her routine. WTH!

Now I’ve used a dry shampoo before but only to absorb the excess oils when I’m wearing a bang with my Indique extensions (click here for a better visual of what I mean) but I rarely hear any naturals use it until now. The way Jessica explained it also made total sense. Once she detangles her hair she will take the dry shampoo and only apply it to her scalp, avoiding the ends of her hair, while massaging the product in for about 5 minutes and letting it sit for another 5 minutes. Using the dry shampoo this way ensures that your hair won’t dry out because the product will only target the build up and oils in the scalp and roots of the hair (which happens to be the real focus when shampooing hair that many people forget). After dry shampooing her scalp she rinses the product out and then shampoos the ends of her hair.

This is something new that I will have to give a try and now I know that, yes, it is ok for kinky curly hair to use a dry shampoo. There are different kinds of dry shampoos from sprays to powders so I am assuming Jessica may be referring to the aerosol type. Here are a few brands you can give a try to test this technique with me!
